We're racing through history!
Have not seen any pictures of this boat that held a top speed record for many
years in the 60s beat all of the Allison powered boats in its day with the Griffin power plant
they used in early Spitfires and Hurricanes, before the Merlins came along please send me some input here.

Permalink Reply by Tony Bugeja on June 15, 2012 at 5:16pm the picture is of miss supertest lll and maverick from the 1959 harmsworth trophy race in detroit. mr. jim thompson and a mcfarland have websites with some really great photos. i'm sorry but i do not know their addresses. perhaps someone could help.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the larger Rolls Royce Griffon engines were not placed into production until well AFTER the Merlins.

Permalink Reply by Gordon Main on August 2, 2012 at 8:56am Thanks dale I was always under the impression that the Allisons where supercharged to keep up with the griffons
I have a DVD of the 1960 Harmsworth that Tony Bugjea sent me and Gale 5 and Nitrogen 1 @ 2 seemed to be able to keep up until the last 2 turns but they always seemed to go into the turns wide and Supertest would hook inside them after about 2 turn they lost a lot of ground they did not look that much slower but htey where smaller and lighter than Supertest. Don't know if you have seen it but I could send you a copy if you give me an address.

Permalink Reply by Tony Sepanski on November 8, 2012 at 3:44pm If you don't have it all ready, the book "Roostertail: The Miss Supertest Story" by John Kelly does a terrific job of telling the Miss Supertest story. It's filled with B&W photos and was clearly a labor of love. It's available on Amazon.
