1979 Squire Shop

Restoration of the 1979 Squire Shop unlimited hydroplane is under way. Designed by Dave Knowlen and built by Norm Berg, this was the boat that legendary driver Chip Hanauer used to scored his very first Unlimited victory.

Follow the progress of the restoration here and by visiting the 1979 Squire Shop Restoration Blog.

The Pay-n-Pak restoration is getting closer to completion and that's a great thing for sure. This means that the Squire Shop project is going to slide just a little further and since I hate to sit around and wait I'll be down at the museum on Thursday after 6:00pm to start to identify V-12 "Merlin" parts that will eventually go into powering this classic unlimited.

Drop by and say hi or if you want to learn something about a Merlin you can give us a hand in identifying these pieces. Either way it would be great to see you all..

Damn, I have a previously scheduled engagement that I have to attend that evening........otherwise I would have liked to have been there for that!

The boat is off of the trailer and sitting on her dollies, there will be an announcement very shortly for the kickoff for the crew and the next steps so stay tuned for that.

We're leaning towards 2uesdays being the official crew nights for this boat, any thoughts as to why?

Gary and I will be at the shop tomorrow morning until about 12:30 to start making plans for disassembling this old gal, drop by and say hi if you are in the area..

The decks are off and the cockpit is close to laying on the floor thanks to the crew lead by Steve Compton tonight. Nice work guys..

    See you all Saturday morning..

Hi Gary, your going to need some really big shop vac's from the look inside that left sponson. Most of the hull looks pretty good for being out in the weather for so long.

  • Timothy Ramsey

Okay a quick change of plans, the left sponson is now off of the boat as when we started to remove the cockpit it was very clear that the left sponson was in a much bigger hurry to come off than the cockpit was.

A special thanks to Steve Compton for the hard work to get this off today, Tuesday will be another day and we'll begin removing the right sponson then..

Excellent work guys, I wish I could have been there!

The hull has been pressure washed out, we are getting close to putting it back together!

Do you still need the Heavy Duty Shop vac, or are you waiting for the boat to dry out? I was going to bring mine down, but unless you need it this weekend, I'll plan on bringing it down on Turesday morning.

    Squire Shop Restoration Update: (04/22/2018)

Saturday 04.21.2018 was a great day for the project, we brought in some great extra help that allowed the team to get all of the bottom plywood panels glued to the aluminum skins thus allowing for the final fit and eventual installation of these bottom panels.

A big thank you to everyone for this huge effort.. :-)

We plan to have the hull ready to roll right side up by the end of May or early June of this year, the amount of support that we have received from the many fans has been huge. A big thank you to all that follow us on the Museum group page, our Facebook page, and on Gary’s Weebly page. We are a year a way from seeing this beautiful hull back on the water and are really looking forward to that event..

Great job, Tim. You fellows have provided some great talent and acumen to take on this challenging project.I can hardly wait to see the Squire Shop in the water once again. I'm going to have my Britannia jeans let out so I can wear them to the launch. Might be the first pair of period-correct Squire Shop jeans to be "flared" at both the legs and the waistband.

Thanks to you and the team for bringing back yet another legendary thunderboat for the museum.
