1941 Gold Cup Remembered

By Fred Farley - Unlimited Hydroplane Historian

Amid concerns about the imminence of World War II, only one boat (MY SIN) answered the starter’s gun for the 1941 APBA Gold Cup on the Navesink River at Red Bank, New Jersey. Guy Simmons ran one 30-mile heat unopposed and was declared the winner by forfeit.

One other Gold Cupper--Horace Dodge’s MISS SYNDICATE--was in attendance but had to withdraw due to engine difficulties.

The expected arrival of GRAY GOOSE III and a couple of 725 Cubic Inch Class challengers failed to materialize.

The 1941 Gold Cup proved to be the final race appearance of Guy Simmons, the 1939 Gold Cup winner. MY SIN, however, continued to be a factor for years to come under another name (TEMPO VI).
