We're racing through history!

Chuck Thompson in Smirnoff surges past Tahoe Miss--ironically--at start of Heat 3B in 1966 Gold Cup ... flipping onto left sponson in first moment of fatal explosion on Detroit River, short of Whittier Hotel. Thompson dominated 1964 (in Tahoe Miss) and 1966 Gold Cups, but never won ultimate trophy. Photo by David Dixon.

I had never noticed the photographer's name until now -- David Dixon. According to a photo that Leo Vanden Berg showed me years ago from his own collection, David Dixon was the photographer who shot perhaps the most-famous Miss Bardahl photo, the one of Musson completely out of the water -- but level -- on the Belle Isle backstretch in 1963.

Pretty amazing photo, must of been from a boat inside the course, and it shows what I always thought happened, structural failure of the right sponson. A lot of people assumed it was just a "classic" stuff.  The force of the hydralic explosion continued to roll the boat completely upside-down.
