The Gold Cup Room at the Whittier Hotel in Detroit, MI

Back in the 1950's, my Grandpa was a security guard at the Whittier Hotel.  According to his stories, all the hydroplane racers used to go to the GOLD CUP ROOM, which was located in the Whittier Hotel on Jefferson in Detroit, MI..  When it was closing, Mr. Calloway who used to manage the Whittier, gave my Grandpa the sign that used to hang over this famous establishment.  I'm sure there are some people out there that would love to see this sign, or possibly own it.  I would be very interested…See More

Hi Peggy,

I have no idea what this sign you have from your Grandpa looks like, but it certainly sounds to me like something truly significant and a treasure to those of us who look upon places that were significant to those of us who still honor and cherish the sport many of us grew up with. By all means, if you can profit by the sale of it, please do. No one will blame you for that.

But, if you have ever visited the Hydroplane Museum I suspect you would understand it might be the perfect resting place for this. Your decision of course and, frankly, I'm excited enough by your offer to ask what you would like to get for it? I would of course probably give it to the museum myself.

My friends and family probably wouldn't have a clue as to its significance, but I'll bet a lot of visitors to the museum would certainly look upon it in awe, much as they do Bill Muncey's memorabilia and uniforms worn by heroic drivers long departed.

Personally, I think given your grandfather's time with the Legends of the Sport, there would be no better tribute to his memory to have the sign hang in the most appropriate place. I wouldn't be surprised if the ghosts of our heroes now departed might not come out at night under the sign in the Museum and continue their conversations. Probably not, but I'd like to think so.

Obviously, I agree with Mr. Roe. Just a thought. Thanks for considering...
