1973 Pay 'n Pak

The "Winged Wonder" Pay 'N Pak ranks among the all-time great unlimited hydroplanes with 22 race victories. It stands with designer Ron Jones, Sr.'s other big winner, the 1980 Rolls-Royce Griffon-powered Miss Budweiser, which likewise captured 22 first-place trophies.See More

Randall E. Roe replied to Tim Matyn's discussion Slo-mo IV picture
"Just Looked at the Slo-Mo IV photo, I guess we narrowed it down to Fageol in the Harmsworth. The Building in the background on the photo I had is at the end of the dock that goes to Gregory's, looks bigger in the old photo than it really…"

Randall E. Roe replied to Tim Matyn's discussion Slo-mo IV picture
"Well, just to confirm  this photo, at the Gold Cup this weekend, there on the Pit Tower is a photo of Peps V right behind our truck witht the same background and  you can read clearly "DetroitMotorboat and Yacht Basin on the building…"

"OK, here  is what my expert says: Driver and Riding Mechanic, no planks = 1950 Gold Cup, Driver only, Detroit River=Silver Cup, Driver and Riding Mechanic with the planks=Harmsworth. Planks continue for '51,52 with stepped tail."

"I also have a newspaper copy of that same photo that was a quarter page enlargement, but cropped a little tighter. The line above it says: "U. S. Speedboat Kings Ready to Defend Harmsworth". It was in a scrapbook I got at a flea market,…"

Randall E. Roe replied to Tim Matyn's discussion Slo-mo IV picture
"For sure! Your shot is absolutely the Detroit River. Mine, I'm not sure now that it's enlarged. It was from an article about the 1950 Harmsworth, a prelude type article. I had thought the judges stand was in the background, but that's…"

Randall E. Roe replied to Tim Matyn's discussion Slo-mo IV picture
"I believe you are thinking of Rusty Rae. There is no deck reinforcement in 1950. Boat was redecked in '53. David Williams book has a photo of the IV & V in the water and the IV still has the low back seats in it, but has the full…"

"The tailfin will be the clincher. The basic triangle fin was for the 1950 Gold Cup only.  "

"Pretty amazing photo, must of been from a boat inside the course, and it shows what I always thought happened, structural failure of the right sponson. A lot of people assumed it was just a "classic" stuff.  The force of the hydralic…"

1973 PAY-N-PAK Seattle

"Yes, the converted  ex-KB hemi powered boat was always Gold, Metal flake as Pride of Pay-n-Pak, 1970-72 and metallic as Miss Budweiser 1973-75. And the replacement honeycomb "winged wonder" was always white, weather it was…"

Randall E. Roe replied to Phil Lampman's discussion Looking for a pair of these for the Blue Blaster Restoration
"Hi, I think the chrome ones are a lot more obscure than the white plastic ones, unfortunetly. If you can't find any, one avenue that might be an option, is one of the places that rechromes auto dash guage panels for restorations. Pick…"
