I have a picture of Gale V that was taken in the early 1950 in Elizabeth City, NC at the International Cup Regatta of Gale IV and V.  I assume in 1954.  The Gale V has sponsons similar to those of the Miss US 1,  the 200 MPH record holder.  My father always said Lee had fliped here one year, lost his watch, and been a jerk because the divers could not find the watch. 

Is this the boat that flipped?  Why are there not more images of this Hull?  Was the wreck in Elizabeth City fatal for this hull?

Another picture of this hull

That is indeed the 1954 version of the GALE V. The next year the sponson transom was changed to a more conventional configuration. I doubt this was the boat that "flipped" as that usually destroyed this type of hydro. This boat was national champ in 1954 and 55 and won the Gold Cup in Seattle in 1955. Which boat is on the right of the second photo? I can´t see....
From what I see, the boat on the right is the 1954 GALE IV.

The Gale that flipped was the first Gale VI, and it did flip in the 1958 Elizabeth City International Cup. Thia was a 60-mile race composed of threee heats run on May 31 and June 1.  There were only 4 boats entered, the 2nd Miss U S 1 with Fred Alter, the Miss U S IV with Frank Saile, the Wildroot Charlie (ex-Gale IV) with Bob Schroeder and the Gale VI with Lee Schoenith.  The flip occurred in the final (3rd) heat. Gale was ahead on points at this juncture with 800, U S 1 had 600, Charlie had 450 and U S IV had on;ly 338.  The final point toal was U S 1 with 1000, Charlie - 750 and U S IV - 563.

 

A new Gale VI was built for the 1959 season and eventually became the Gale VII.
