Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum
We're racing through history!
I am a volunteer at the Detroit Historical Museum working at their Collections Resource Center entering photographs into their database. These are hydroplane photos donated to the museum and span the years from Gar Wood's Miss Americas to boats and races from the 1950s and 1960s. Many were taken by professional photographers during races on the river.
If you haven't seen them I urge you to take a look by logging on to detroithistorical.org. Click the collections button and key in the name of your favorite boat, in quotation marks, like "Shanty". In total there are now over 1,000 pictures available, and I am adding more every week.
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is the permanent home of Miss Pepsi. If you haven't seen her before you should stop in at the museum on Belle Isle when you come to Detroit. I think she is truly on of the most beautiful step hydroplanes ever built. There are also many great photos of her on the website.
