Vertical fin on Shanty II...

Hi Guys! I'm slowly figuring out the web-site and this is my first post. Had a BLAST at the Museum!

I want to make another vertical stabilizer for Shanty II. The one I have on it now I made before I had a picture of it; It's way to fat and upright. So, having looked at a lot of pics from the era, I'm thinking it was a flat sided affair with no aerodynamic cross section? Were most boats tails that way? What's your opinion?

Also, in Mr. Doug Fords' book "What Were They Thinking" I would like to obtain really good copies of 3 pictures that I believe you have (page 79, schematic. page 81, roll over, and page 84, front ski). How do I go about this? I will pay you for any expenses that it might take to get good prints of these, of course.

Hi Steve.

I'm not completely certain, but I think you are correct about the vertical fin on Shanty II. I think it was pretty much flat sided. I have looked through all the photos I have, and none indicates that it had any aerodynamic cross section, although not perfectly clear.

In my book, the schematic was tacken from a scan of an article that Ken Muscatel has, and I think that David Williams also has. They can likely scan a good copy for you.

The roll-over shot on page 84 came from a web search without credit to a photographer. It was a poor quality image which I enhanced to make it more clear. Perhaps David has a better copy in the museum files.

The photograph of the front ski came from the museum, from a photo of Shanty II when she was stored in a barn. But, it was only a fair image, which I cleaned up and enhanced for the book.
