Event Description

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN US AS ONE OF SEATTLE’S BIGGEST SPORTS STARS FINDS A PERMANENT HOME!

Before the SEAHAWKS, SOUNDERS or MARINERS, the Seattle sports scene was dominated by Unlimited Hydroplane Racing.
One of the region’s most successful hydroplanes was Dave Heerensperger’s 1973 PAY N PAK. This revolutionary boat was nicknamed “The Winged Wonder” because it was the first boat to use a horizontal stabilizer. The PAK set over a dozen World Records and won 16 races in 3 years while bringing home to Seattle 3 straight National Championships. From 1973 to 1975, The PAK was one of the best known and well loved sports stars in the Northwest.
In 1976 Dave Heerensperger retired from Unlimited Hydroplane Racing and sold the PAK to Bill Muncey, who ran it for one more year – winning 5 additional races and another National Championship. The boat was eventually retired and passed through several hands before being bought and restored by local collector Dr. Kenneth Muscatel. Dave Heerensperger passed away in 2018, and it looked like the Heerensperger family’s connection to the sport was over.
This year, Dave’s son Joe Heerensperger and daughter Julie Heerensperger Warren have teamed up with Dr. Muscatel to gift “The Winged Wonder” PAY N PAK to the Kent-based Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum. The Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum is a 501-c3 not for profit whose mission is to “promote lifelong learning while honoring, celebrating and preserving the history of Hydroplane Racing”.
