Who is our favorite hydroplane driver?

My most exciting hydro experience for me was 1963

I had just graduated from HS and I had been chosen as one of the tender boats in the Seafair Trophy race of 1963. I entered my grandfather's boat that he had built himself. It was wide enough to support a large sump pump. The day of the race the officials placed me and my boat at the buoy just after the exit buoy on the course.

On race day the weather was hot and after the first heat a rain/lightning/wind storm came up on the lake. The rain was fierce as was the wind and my boat was eventually tied up to a Coast Guard cutter assigned to the race. When the storm had passed, the race resumed and during the final heat two hydros, the Miss Thriftway and Miss Exide (formerly Miss Wahoo) driven by Bill Muncey and Mira Slovak were among the final contenders for the cup.  In the last lap Bill pushed the Miss Thriftway too hard and blew a quill shaft. There I was with my tender boat working my way out to pick Mr. Muncey up and tow him back to the pits. I asked him what happened and, as he sat on the deck of the hydro, he just said in a disgusting way, I just pushed it too hard and that was it.

I believe it was Miss Thriftway's last official race.
