My old man raced outboard “D” class hydro's. He had a backer who was afflicted with Polio but Dad drove the boats. Fully modified Kiekhaefer (Mercury) blocks. Bob Jerome coundn't ,drive them but he could sure as hell polish ports and tune the shit out of them. Dad hit a wake and tried flying with pour results and from the dint in that skull hugger helmet it would of killed him for sure. There weren't any Full Face helmets then. A half metal, half leather helmet adopted from stock car racing. They raced at Kings Ferry in Savannah, Ga. mostly which was brackish water. They put on a race at St. Mary's in Salt water one time and had huge ignition problems with stuff grounding out and misfiring I guess due to the salt waters conductivity. I remember Dad's main competitor mounting an ice tray in front of the carb intakes because the Old man's rooster tail would drown him out. Those were great days for an 8 year old kid who's Dad mostly won or tried to kill himself trying.
